Hi, Yes, I visited the Palace of Versailles, or simply Versailles, is a royal chÃ¢teau in Versailles. In French, it is known as the ChÃ¢teau de Versailles. When the chÃ¢teau was built, Versailles was a country village; today, however, it is a suburb of Paris. From 1682, when King Louis XIV moved from Paris, until the royal family was forced to return to the capital in 1789, the Court of Versailles was the centre of power in French "Ancien RÃ©gime". Versailles is therefore famous not only as a building, but as a symbol of the system of absolute monarchy which Louis XIV espoused.
The Chateau proposes two itineraries: either a guided tour or not. Apart from the state apartments of the king and queen and the Galerie des Glaces (the Hall of Mirrors, where the Treaty of Versailles was signed to end World War 1), which you can visit on your own, most of the palace can only be viewed in guided groups, and whose times are much more restricted. Unfortunately, only a small part of the palace can be visited : the State Apartments of the King and Queen, and the Hall of Mirrors. The worst time to visit the Chateau is on Sunday. A guided tour, for an extra charge, takes you in the King's Private Bedroom, the Royal Opera, and the rooms occupied by Madame du Barry. And, for a little more, you may visit the pavilions of the Grand and Petit Trianons. Don't set out to see all the palace in one day for it's not possible. Quite apart from the size, tours of both Mme du Barry's apartments and of the Dauphin and Dauphine's apartments take place at the same time.

I wish you a nice visit, for me it's a French symbol, one part of France's History, an very beautiful area, the town "Versailles" is touristic but nice, the Website is well made, you need much time, I wish you a sunny weather.

my sister went there. she thought that the Palace and Park of Versailles was absolutely gorgeous, and the chateau. also the churches are very beautiful. My sister said it was fun but rainy a lot. The people carry umbrellas everywhere they go. the weather is unpredictable. My sister liked the food mostly. It has unique spices and different foods. have fun!

I'm french and living just near Versailles.
Weather is this last days a little cold, but you could enjoy the gigantic garden and the "lake" .
The mirror Gallery is open again after some years of work, and is a real masterpiece
The town is famous for having a lot of very good restaurant and typical "marchÃ©" ( Market place) spice market, meat market, flower, ....
The town is on my opinion more pretty than Paris, and interesting if you like architecture

Do your self a favor and take a guided tour. There are so many reasons why certain symbols and architecture are they way they are. You would benefit by having someone explain it all to you. You would need at least a full day to see Versailles.

I liked Versailles for several reasons. It is very beautiful - both the mansion and the grounds. It is a very historic place. Iearned a lot about Louis 14 and his heirs and it is also has the hall of mirrors where many events have happened. It has a fascinating story. You see so much wealth there - it just puts you in complete awe.

As for sites to see in France - that is a very broad question. I could go on for pages. Get your self a frommers guide and read up on France and then decide for yourself what would most interest you.

Versailles and Paris are phenomenally beautiful places. The Palace of Versailles is something you will never experience in any other place, and Paris has too many things to see to describe here.

I recommend you buy Rick Steve's guide to France or to Paris (if you're not leaving Paris). They tell EVERYTHING, including prices, hours of operation, and ideas on planning your trip. I've never found books as helpful as these for travel, but he only writes them about Europe, so take advantage!'

Versailles is basically the famous (gorgeous) castle & grounds and the small town that surrounds it. There aren't a lot of "famous sites" in Versailles but it is close to Paris where you have your choice of famous sites to visit. If you're actually staying in Versailles, the commute to Paris every day might be a big of a drag and somewhat expensive. Be sure to get a metro / RER pass that goes out to your zone (8, I think). Enjoy.
