I suppose that some places in France are more open to outsiders moving in than other places are. I have heard that people in the South are a bit unfriendly, I imagine it might have to do with the fact that tourism there is oversubscribed and there is the very real fear that the local families will eventually be priced out of the property market (which has happened in some places in Ireland). I wouldn't mind the West, like Brittany, I've been there before and it's really nice. I found the French to be reasonably friendly, they do prefer it if you can speak their language. It really helps if you can compliment their food in French!

Yes, I lived in France for a year during my University course.
I personally love the country and enjoy spending time there, but it depends really on whether you enjoy their culture and way of life.
Many people find the French rude and disliking foreigners, but in my opinion that is only in large cities (Paris being the number one culprit!).
Outside of the large cities, people are friendly and helpful (plus are great cooks!)

France is a diverse country as it is so large. I would love to settle there; it helps if you can speak the language.

Yes it was very pretty, not too expensive, the food was amazing. The people i met were kind of mixed, some seemed kind of bothered but most were nice, especially when they found out i was american and wasnt cocky and dumb.

I wouldnt settle anywhere else other than the U.S., Its still the best country in the world so dont be dumb, but if you wanted to take an extended vacation. stay around paris theres so much to do there.

yupp, but just around Marseilles.

we lived there for 1.5 months - didn't like it.
the weather was lovely, but the ppl weren't.

Yes Paris wonerful shopping and food-----NO the French do not like americans for slaughtering their language. Super place to visit but you will come back home.

The south of France is beautiful and the people were extremely nice. I spent 3 months outside Marseilles and never had any trouble. As a matter of fact they were thrilled to find out I was American. The weather was nice, but the spring almost killed me because of allergies. The euro is very strong against the dollar so the exchange rate stinks.

i think southern France is beautiful ... not too keen on Paris as far as cities go tho ....

I've been to France many times, and all over...from Normandy to the Alps, to Strasbourg, to the Provence, to the Ardeche area, and around Marseilles...oh, and of course, Paris. Most of the French countryside is quiet farmland or vineyards, and the people are a bit on the poor side. Paris is a different world altogether. The Alps are very nice. Normandy and the channel coast are cold and rainy. The southern Atlantic coast has some great surfing if you like that. My favorite area is southern France on the Mediterranean, but away from the tourist areas, out in the nature. I prefer Spain over France with regard to living there. American man living in Europe.
