Yes I have a few times. In Paris I found the people to be snobby and contemptuous of my very limited French.
In Nice and the Riviera area I found the people to be much nicer. When I used my poor French they helped me out, corrected my pronunciation (but really nicely) and seemed to appreciate the effort I was making.

I've been a few times over many years and visited several different parts of France. I loved it every time. If you attempt to speak French, they are usually appreciative, but I've had friends who have been told to stop butchering the language.
