Help...Charles De Gaulle Hotel and train service......? |
I am going to France this winter. I have come across two amazing packages. The first one is in downtown Paris close to a metro station but is at a 1 star Holiday inn and costs $40 more p/p. The second is located at Charles De gaulle airport, which is about 30 mins from downtown paris but is at a 4 star Hilton and is about $40 less p/p. The airport website says there is a train service into Paris, but I cant find the prices anywhere. My trip is 5 nights/7 days. There are 3 of us (all girls). What is the best deal? |

You could go either way. The train fare is about 8 euros (roughly $10?) from the airport to Gare du Nord in downtown Paris. That would probably make the airport hotel cheaper, but then, you're not actually staying in Paris then, and you'd have to plan your day around getting in and out.
I agree with the others overall - find another hotel actually in Paris, and use that. |

Hi,, i was there not too long ago myself,, ok here is the scoop,,,
the air port is a long way from downtown,,,, a long way,,,,so,, the train,,subway is the way to go , its cheap and not difficult to understand,,, get someone at the hotel show you .. they will provide maps and such that you will need....
Now,, the 1 star downtown,,,??? hmmmm ,, i dont think so?? there are 100's of other hotels all around ,,,,,if you can,, look into that,,,, in hotels.com......other wise.. stay at the hilton,, ,but its not downtown,,,, remember.....
good luck..... |

From CDG to Paris, take the RER "B" line (express commuter trains) to the city (please notice that the train continues to other suburb so you don´t expect that the train ends in the city). Trip takes to Gare du Nord 32 min.
Fares:
Adult : 8.10 euros
Children (4 to 10 years) : 5.75 euros
The normal RER fare is applied on this line.
Check here for info about fares and maps of Paris Metro, RER, tramway and bus:

My advice is that altho the cheaper Hilton sounds tempting, I would want to get the full Parisian experience and stay in downtown Paris. If you are not stuck on the package...., why not stay in a French hotel? You can probably find a two star French for the same price as 1 star American chain, and you will get more of the French experience. (Don't worry, they'll speak English)
As for the train to Paris, you would have to take the RER (which is similar to the Metro, but runs more to the suburbs). I would expect that the prices would be similar to Metro prices-most likely more & will depend on the distance of you travels. There also is an Air France Shuttle that runs into town which I believe is 20 Euros round trip. |

Keep looking. Staying at the airport will be a complete pain you will waste lots of time and money commuting back and forth and there will be nothing to do around your hotel.
You need to ask yourself how much time will I be in my hotel room. A clean one star in a decent neighborhood might work. If the neighborhood is dicey pay more for a hotel, even a low star rated one, in a good/central part of the city. The money willbe well spent. |

The best deal is up to you.
I can tell you that from CDG airport you will be about 40 min from Downtown. Using the "B" line.
You can get a Metro pass which works on the RER and Metro Lines Rail and Bus for aroung 35 Euros for the week.
Now if you want to know the truth, there are hundreds of hotels throughout Paris, all at a variety of rates. You can probably find you a 3 Star hotel on the Left Bank for a reasonable rate.
As a note, I travle about twice a year to Paris on business, and I am usually entertaining clients. If you get the chance look up a writer/guide on the internet...I believe his name is Rick Stevens, but I could be wrong, my mind goes blank when it comes to names. He does a ton of stuff on PBS and has a ton of European Travel guides, with some that are very specific to Paris.
Be prepared, the Rooms in the hotels in France are typically much smaller than what we are used to here in the states.
As a tip, if you are into art and into Monet...you should try to visit Monet's garden while you are there. It's about a 40 minute train ride from Paris. When you are there, you will see the very views that inspired Monet to paint his paintings. Now I'm not into art, but this was truly an amazing site for me.
Of course if you are into History, take a trip to Versailles. This is where Ben Franklin spent his time recruiting the French to Join the Americans in our war of Independence back in 1776. The history here and throughout the city of Paris is truly breathtaking!!!
If you would like more informatin then respond to me...of if I'm set up correctly you may be able to e-mail me...I'll keep an eye out on my Q&A.
Best wishes to you!!! |
