Helpful hints for visiting Paris, France? |
My husband and I live in Germany although we are American. We decided on a whim to visit Paris this weekend for our anniversary and since it is so quick I was hoping/wondering if there was anything I just had to know. If anyone could tell me also how far of a walk from the tower to the louvre that would be helpful as well. Any hints for the metro? ok thats all :) |

I walked from the Eiffle to the Louvre at a casual pace and it took almost an hour.
The metro is pretty good. You can pretty much go anywhere on metro, its near all major attractions. Don't buy a pass its cheaper with tickets (10 for 11 euros). Grab a brochure from the hotel, most them have the metro map inside. It looks confusing but it actually is pretty easy to read after you try the metro the first time.
Also, I suggest taking the Siene Cruise at night. It will be very romantic for your aniversary. |

This might help for the Metro:

It's quite a walk from the Eiffel Tower to the Louvre, but you can jump on the metro.
You should definitely see Sacre Cour - It's a church up on the hill. You can either walk up the steps, or there is a lift that runs up one side of the hill. Versailles Palace is also worth seeing - you can get a half day tour. Check at the tourist information at the airport or main station. |

If you head over to the Arc De Triumpe there is a bus you can get on there, it takes you around and drops you off at the eiffel tower, the Louve, Notre Damme, and Montmarte where you can walk up to Sacre Coure, we bought a ticket and used it for the two days we were there, you can get on and off when you want. When you get off at the Eiffel Tower it is right next to the river seine , you can hop on a boat and take an hour ride down river and back also |

Hi there... one thing you absolutely Must experience is standing on top of the "Tour Montparnasse" at night/ in the evening. It's amazingly romantic. There is a restaurant with jazzy music and then you can take the stairs to go up the "roof" to have a 360° view on Paris.
I checked the route from the Louvre => the Eiffel tower and it's about 4,5 km => 9 minute walk. (source: google maps)
You should definitely buy one of those special metro tickets... then you can take the metro whenever you want...an absolute must in Paris!
Have a nice trip, Paris is wonderful! |

Ummm and dont take the metro after like 11.. some really weird people go on.. i know i went an a crazy guy like attacked us,, almost:P overall, just enjoy yourself its a beautiful place, although not everyone there is pleasant. have fun:) |

There are open top bus tours in Paris. You can board them at the Rue de Rivoli, near the Louvres, but they stop at all monuments and you can alight/board back at any monument the bus stops at.
Its an easy/untiring way to see most of the important monuments in Paris, then you can go back and visit at leisure those that you prefer.
You can also use the boats travelling on the Seine river, registered commentaries are multilingual.
I have done both, but quite honestly, I prefer the open top buses. The boats are nice if you fancy a romantic dinner (expensive).
Do not miss having dinner at St Germain on Rive Gauche but be warned that this place is quite touristy.
I prefer to eat around the Rue de la Montagne Ste Genevieve or Rue Mouffetard.
You can also dine around the Bastilles Place and the Rue de Lappe (where you will find dancing halls and you can learn to dance the "java").
Of course, you can dine at the restaurant Jules Verne on the Tour Eiffel, but that meal only would probably double your travel expenses.
When I am in Paris, my favourite restaurant is Le Weppler, Place de Clichy, a seafood restaurant with an outstanding oyster bar. Around the place de Clichy, you have the Boulevards des Batignolles, where you can taste the best "couscous" in Paris.
You find also chain restaurants like L'Assiette au Boeuf, Bistrot Romain, etc... where you will find consistent quality and freshness.
Fist time we were in Paris with my wife, 10 years ago, we stopped at night on the Trocadero place (where they have the marine museum, museum of mankind and cinema museum). The view was breathtaking and we bought a small model of the Eiffel Tower as a souvenir (the to-do thing) that my wife still cherishes. |

i've been to paris several times recently, and would advise you to get a 2-day ticket on *l'open tour* bus.
it's fantastic-it takes you around all the famous monuments, and you can get off wherever you want.
the tickets are very reasonably priced aswell (around 25 euros for 2 days),and it allows you to visit all the famous sites in very little time!!
i hope you have fun on your holiday-i fell in love with the city the 1st time i went, and hope you do too!! |

Also, save money on climbing the Eiffel Tower by elevator to the top of Monparnasse Tower where you can see all of Paris and have the Eiffel Tower in the background of your pix...
For a fantastic and truly typical French meal look no further than le pot de terre. For 15euros you get the best 3 course meal in Paris and a wonderful dining experience as if you where in the French countryside. www.lepotdeterre.com |
