In France there's still a theory test and even before that you've the notorious french paperwork to negotiate. The practical's not plain sailing either.

The DVLA (in the uk) are thinking of introducing a mandatory practise period that all licence applicants will have to go through. As they're talking of it now, it would mean that you'd have to spend more accompanied hours driving as a learner than a pilot in training would.

If you can brace going through the UK system now, it would be worth it.

Why are you so nervous about taking a test here? If it's to do with the theory test, and the more academic side of things, you could maybe find different ways of learning what you need to know. Not everyone's good at memorising facts from a page, but if you mix things up by associating, for example, a warning sign with the image of a crowd of bulls charging past it toward you, suddenly what you need to remember is easy. That's just one method - I'm sure search engines would throw out a lot more.

And if that's not the problem, maybe you need a really good teacher that you're on a level with?

You've asked this question about lots of different countries now - are you intending to take your test in all of them?!
Basically if you don't get a British driving license you will find it hard to get insurance here, or even rent a car.

You can take your driving test in any EU nation. I shall now list every EU nation for you:

You can do your driving test in any and all of these very fine nations. You will receive a local driving licence. This will allow you to drive in that country. It will also allow you to drive as a foreigner in any other EU nation. Even if you are a UK citizen you have to pass a UK driving test in the UK to receive a UK driving licence.

THE ONLY WAY TO GET A FULL UK DRIVING LICENCE WITHOUT TAKING A UK DRIVING TEST IS TO BE THE QUEEN, THE QUEEN AUTOMATICALLY RECEIVES HER LICENCE AND CAN LEGALLY DRIVE WITHOUT A LICENCE. UNLESS YOU ARE THE QUEEN THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO YOU.

So yes you can do your test abroad but you will not get a UK driving licence.

We Brits drive on the correct side of the road. It dates back to when horse and cart was the only vehicle. The coach drivers would drive on the left because then their sword arms were free to defend themselves against oncoming highwaymen etc. We carried this tradition on, and the French didn't (simply because they're odd).

If you learned to drive over there, it may be easier initially (if you speak /french, that is), but you'd have to learn French signs, and you would get used to drive on the left. When you come back to the UK, you'll have great trouble adjusting to the signs, symbols, miles per hour (they use kilometres!) and driving on the Left.

Do it here, it's easier in the long run! It's cheaper for insurance/hire too!

it is possible if you take lessons in a french driving school. I did it in 2001 and at that time every student by law had to have at least 20 hours of driving school lessons. It is a great place to learn though.

You're best taking it in England, then you can use it in most other countries, otherwise it will not be valid in in England, I'm not sure about other countries.

You can drive in the UK with any EU license perfectly legally.

This is getting a bit daft now - you only need one test to drive in these countries - take it in England, get your green card and go and hassle the Greeks, Polish, Portuguese, French etc etc etc - wonder where the next place will be.

Oh I agree - don't visit Leicester!!! We get bad enough drivers as it is without a British/foreign licence holder trashing our streets

Why do you want to take it in france? In france when we pass driving test we are allowed to drive in foreing countries.
