The Metro is the quickest and cheapest way to get around Paris. Depending on how long you plan on being in Paris, I would suggest getting a Carte Orange, a weeklong Metro pass, also good for the bus. You'll need a 1x1 passport-style photo for the pass. You can purchase it at any ticket booth in the Metro. The price is around 15 Euros. It works Monday-Sunday and they stop selling it on the Wednesday of that week.

Your other option is to purchase a carnet of Metro tickets. You get 10 tickets for around 11 Euros. Individually, the Metro tickets are 1.40 Euros. Buying them individually isn't the best idea if you're on a budget.

I'd go with the Carte Orange.

Depend on how far u wanna travel in Paris. The metro has zones 1-8. The cheapest ticket you can get is either the individual trip ticket or the 1 wk pass of zones 1-3.

This is the RATP website (Paris Metro), check out their "Occassional Traveling" and "Travel Pass"

the metro or a bus

the best would be the metro, the 2nd the buses... the metro is easier/cheaper but the buses allow you to see the city (but some metro stations are cool too)

If you're staying toward the city center, most of the city is really accessible on foot. I was there for a week and only took the metro once and the train twice (to Versaille and the airport, too far for the metro).
If you are not up to a lot of walking though and you think you will be taking the metro often you can get a pass for it, which will cut down the cost.
I really enjoyed just wandering through the city on foot though, I think you find more interesting things that way.
