When you settle down and have an permanant address, apply for a package which includes telephone landline, internet provider and satellite TV. The average monthly fee for such a package is 29.90€ for a city household, 34.90€ for household in some more remote area like Les Alpes or countryside.
The good thing about this package is : it's got all landline calls free, including France ( Metropolitan France and all French colonies ), most western European countries including the U.K, other developped countries like the U.S, Canada, Hong Kong , Japan, Australia etc.
Here are some of these package providers and fare lists :
http://www.edcom.fr/abonnement-adsl-telephonie-illimitee.html

I've been using SFR neufbox for years. I pay 29.90€ every month and I can make phone call to the countries below 24 hours a day, seven days a week free of charge ( not exactly free but I paid the 29.90€ which includes all these free calls ). I stick to SFR neufbox because they provide free calls to more than 60 countries and their internet reception and service are the best so far. I used to be a customer of Orange and Alice but found their internet connections were poor that the computer alway suddenly switched off cause of local connection problem. So far on the market the 2 best provider nowadays are SFR and Free.
Below are the countries I can call all day long free being a SFR neufbox cutomer :

Metropolitan France ( include Corsica ), Guadeloupe,Martinique, La Réunion.
Germany, Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Spain, ( include Majorca and Canary Islands ), Estonia, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Hungary, Italy ( include Sicilly ), Lettonia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherland, Poland, Portugal, Czec Republic, U.K, Slovakia, Slovena, Sweden.
The Azores, Albania, Algeria ( only those using Assilabox ), Andorra, Argentian, Australia, Bosnia, Canada ( calling mobile phone is free as well ), Canaries, Chili, China, South Korea, Croatia, United States ( include Hawaii, Alaska and all mobile phone number ), Guernesey, Hong Kong, Iceland, Israel,Japan, Liechtenstein,Macao,Macedonia, Madeira, Maldives, Monaco, Norway, New Zealand, Saint. Marin, Singapore, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, Vatican.

I think the best thing is to use Skype,

I was calling from UK to France and with 10 euros I could easily call for 2:30 on mobile phones so I guess on normal phones must be much more,

You can also contract an internet contract (SFR box for example) and call for free all the UK

So my advice SKYPE for mobile phones and an internet line (around 30euros/month) for all the other calls

good luck with ur job

if you move in France, take internet with illimited phone call to europe.
You can call for 3 hours in a row in uk for free.
Usually it cost around 30€/month.

That is what my mum and sister pay with Alice broadband.
They call me as much as we want. And it is really nice.

Hope that helps
