You can stay and watch your luggage while they are checking it. Most of the time, they don't even go through it, unless something suspicious is in there. Some airports, this will take longer than others. But if you really don't want them to take it, just stay by as they do it. Have a lock on the luggage and if they need to get in, you can unlock it, most airports will allow this.
If it is something valuable, consider just carrying it on. Hopefully the item can be used as a carry-on and is small enough. This will be the best way.
Finally, you could ship the item home. It may cost a little more, but you could insure it and have more confidence.
But don't be too concerned. These people are there to do a job, if they would be caught doing something like that they would probably lose their job. The airport wants people to be safe and that is the main concern of the TSA. I'm sure it happens once and a while, but I wouldn't be too concerned. Just keep any valuables, like jewlery and such, as a carry-on.
Have a great trip! |

Well, for one thing, luggage checks are carried out behind the scene so you cannot monitor your luggageat all. If it is anything valuable, hand carry them with you. This will ensure they are with you through the flight.
Most airports though do try to maintain a professional image and they will not want to have staff that take things off luggages. If you find this happens to you, file a complain with the airport handling company immediately. Even complain to the civil aviation authority on this. They will check and if true, you will be compensated for your loss. It will yake some time, but is the best recourse.
So do not allow your luggage handling deter you from flying. |

Keep expensive items as carry on or mail them home. |

well dont buy any sharp objects or that "could" be a threat,
i bought this very cute things to pick up food (like sausages or ham, i dont remember the name) in singapore and they took it but gave 'em to me when we landed... so you can tell them to give it back to you when you land. |
