How clean is the air in france?

Compared to lets say...america? I realize the air in america is worse than other placces in america so please compare somewhat specifically. For example, telling me it's cleaner than in LA doesnt really help much.
Additional Details

You have to consider that the air quality in America varies enormously between towns and the country and there are huge areas of the USA where the air is very clean. The concentration of population in American cities is often much higher than in French towns, where it is distributed more thinly. American cars are fuel greedy and not particularly geared towards clean exhaust fumes. Plants still discharge a considerable amount of pollution into the atmosphere, whilst in France you can live next to a recycling centre or a waste disposal unit without any noticeable pollution. Paris is considered "polluted" but away from the main arteries the air is quite clean. You also have to bear in mind that because France is higher up the globe than most American states there is not the same concentration of pollution due to heat.
France has been one of the leaders in taking measures against pollution generally, and has been putting recycling measures in place before many other nations.
Anyhow here are some statistics for you. I hope they are useful in your research:

It is generally cleaner than US...Europe make more effort to fight against pollution than US.
