How do I find a long-term apartment in France?

I'm moving from the US to Metz from September until May. I already have a job and a visa lined up. What is the typical method to find an apartment in France? I am near the student age so a student style apartment is not a problem. How do most other students find places? Do I have to go to an agency and pay them a big fee?

Welcome to France !!

I've got a ruler!!
Freely wave about a white flag, and soon they'll be throwing apartments at your feet, as it were:-)

You could try FUSAC, Frech USA Contacts, online or once you are there they put out a weekly magazine with appt. listings and job opportunities. I know that in Paris the American Church put out appt. and job listings as well. You could also try the University if there is one there. Metz is fabulous, I went there on my way from Strasbourg to Paris. What a wonderful, rewarding experience you are about to have. Good luck!
