Get a Skype-In number based in France. Have calls to that number forwarded to a UK landline number. Then from a French landline, you ring the Skype-In number in France.

Skpe is good other wise use msn and do a video/voice call - and that is included in the internet price - just go to www.msn.com. microphones only cost a couple of quid. im in germany and thats how i call the uk! otherwise if uve got a mobile join vodafone and make sure uve got vodafone passport - that means u pay 75p for each call u make then u use ur free minutes (note this is only for contract phones).

used to live in Wales
I use telerabais
You dial 0811 310 310 if you are calling a landline, or 0826 850 850 if you are calling a mobile. In either case, you listen to message telling you welcome to telerabais and then you dial the full UK number, ie, 0044........
If you call a landline, it is charged as a local call.
If you call a mobile, it's 15 centimes a minute.
I don't know whether this works from a mobile, I have only used it calling from a landline
