take the metro (underground). There's a Gare du Nord Station. It's about 5-10 minutes away.
From montaparnasse-bienvenue station, take the 4 (purple line) headed towards Clignancourt and get off about 15 stations later at Gare du Nord.

You want the metro for sure - bus is more confusing! The metro is more reliable/comes more often, just make sure you are headed in the right direction (marked by the name of the final stop on signs on the platform)
