Hi, by the way.
Here's how I got there last year. Take the P&O (v. v. v. cheap) from Dover to Calais.
You could drive to La Rochelle, which in that case you would take this route: http://www.viamichelin.co.uk/viamichelin/gbr/dyn/controller/Itineraires?strStartCityCountry=1424&strStartAddress=&strStartMerged=calais&strDestCityCountry=1424&strDestAddress=&strDestMerged=la+rochelle&choiceType=1&ie=UTF-8&x=28&y=12
But if you want to take the train (quicker), fill this in: http://www.sncf.co.uk/
Alternatively, you could take the train directly from London (St Pancras station) all the way to La Rochelle: http://www.sncf.co.uk/
If you want convenience galore, take the Eurostar from London Ashford to Avignon, France (shortest and v. v. quick): http://www.eurostar.com/UK/uk/leisure/travel_information/before_you_go/fares/london_ashford_to_avignon.jsp and http://destinationsen.eurostar.com/sisp/index.htm?fx=location&loc_id=131474&send=Go
Once in Avignon, you can drive to La Rochelle: http://www.viamichelin.co.uk/viamichelin/gbr/dyn/controller/Itineraires?strStartCityCountry=1424&strStartAddress=&strStartMerged=avignon&strDestCityCountry=1424&strDestAddress=&strDestMerged=la+rochelle&choiceType=1&ie=UTF-8&x=42&y=1
Or take the train, using the same method as before.
Hope this helps xxx |

Bonjour!
If you are driving down then Try Brittany Ferries. Best crossings are usually, Plymouth to Roscoff, or Portsmouth to Caen or St Malo. You could then drive down to La Rochelle, just as an indication, from Caen its about 320 miles.
Alternatively, you could Fly from Birmingham, Bristol, Southampton or Stansted Airports as they all operate a service to La Rochelle Airport, through Flybe, EasyJet or RyanAir. You could then arrange a taxi transfer locally or organise car hire through Europcar or Budget.
Hope this helps a little bit. Bon Voyage! |

There is an airport at La Rochelle. The best ferry route is Plymouth to Roscoff in Brittany.
http://www.brittany-ferries.com/
Much faster to drive from Roscoff to La Rochelle than from Calais but the sea crossing takes longer.
Bon voyage.
edit. You may also want to consider Portsmouth to Cherbourg.

The word 'ferries' in your question suggests 'car travel'. How about this - From Portsmouth you have the choice of Caen, Cherbourg or St Malo via Brittany Ferries. Then assuming Caen - (furthest East) drive South via Rennes/Nantes and then La Rochelle. About 300 miles from Caen. Or if a leisurely holiday considr Plymouth-Roscoff (also Brittany Ferries) then East via Lorient and St Nazaire through to La Rochelle. About 350 miles. Visit the Brittany Ferries site it will give you all the info. Really easy way is Poole-Cherbourg and a slow trog via Mont St Michel- Angers and the Poitou Charante byways. No motorways or tolls. Enjoy |

Go Southampton - Cherbourg or Portsmouth - St. Malo by ferry & then just head south.
ps anyone suggesting Dover - Calais, go to the bottom of the geography class! |
