The Bir Hakeim Metro station is will be temporarily unavailable this year (2007-2008) so you’ll want to use either the Trocadero or Dupleix stops in the interim. (Trocadero is actually located on the Right Bank so you’ll need to cross the bridge over the Seine River to reach the Eiffel Tower.)

The Paris Metro (undergorund) system is very efficient and cheap. At Gare du Nord, go to the Metro station (within the main station, or just across the road), and buy a ticket from the machine, which will cost you all of €1.50. Then follow signs for Line 4 and take this in the direction of Porte d'Orleans.. Get off 3 stations later at Strasbourg St Denis and change to Line 9 - direction Pont de Sevres (your one ticket will cover both legs). Get off at Trocadero which is on the opposite side of the river from the Eiffel Tower and from where you will have great views and photo opportunities. You can then walk down to the river, cross the bridge and walk right up to the tower. By now you will be familiar with how the Metro system works and will be able to get back to base quite easily. If you are planning to take 10 or more trips on the Metro (or if there are two of you taking five trips) then get a "Carnet" of 10 Metro tickets which is even cheaper.

Make it easy on yourself. Go down the nearest Metro stop to where you're staying, look at the map, and get off at the Tracadero stop. They just walk south over the bridge and you'll be standing under the tower.

If you want to have something handy and accurate, order a copy of a good Plan de Paris from any large bookstore chain.

Stand just about anywhere in Paris. Look up. Start walking.

The name of the street the effle tower is at is called "Avenue Gustave Effel" so just go to a maps website like maps.google.com and enter the address your going to the effle tower from then then the street name of the effle tower then just follow the steps.

Other people have answered for the directions. I want to let you know some about the Eiffel Tower. If you want to go to the top, allow about 3 hours to do so, the lines can be quite long (we didn't expect it to be so long of a wait). Also, if it is too windy, they won't let people up to the top, so maybe you can check the weather before you go.

It is beautiful! Enjoy!

Note that different lines sell different tickets. You can't buy lift tickets in the stairs line and vice versa. See: http://traveljapanblog.com/wordpress/tag/eiffel-tower/

Just be prepared for animals with no idea how a queue works.
