the health service is a mixture of private and public, not like the UK where the two are separate. Quite often a GP will send you to a private clinic but you don't pay extra.
Emergency care is free
Other things, like visiting your GP or a hospital doctor involve a charge which is partly reimbursed. Eg going to the GP costs 22 euros, you get (I think) 15 back from the "NHS" and 7 back from your optional health insurance.
There is no prescription charge but you pay for the medicine and it is partly reimbursed, you get between 50% and 70% back depending on the kind of medicine.
Hardly any waiting lists, except for eye tests, because the local optician does not do a test, you go to a hospital opthamologist. |
