You have different metro passes: The unlimited daily travel "Mobilis" card (starts at 5.40 euros depending on the metro zones); the inlimited weekly or monthly "Carte Orange" (starts at 15.70 euros for the weekly card and 51.50 euros for the monthly card; the "Paris Visite" pass with options for 1, 2, 3 or 5 unlimited travel days (various prices starting at 8.35 euros).
The metro is the cheapest transport option in Paris. It costs 1.40 euro per ticket, and 10.40 euros for a book of 10 tickets. Equally cheap are Paris buses. They cost the same and accept the same tickets as the metro.

In general, the metro is the easiest and cheapest way to get from place to place.

The weakly and monthly pass system is a little complicated, and some of the passes require a passport photo. See the following link: http://goeurope.about.com/cs/paris/qt/carte_orange.htm

If you buy a "carnet" you get 10 one-way metro tickets that allow transfers (good for any travel inside Paris, but not to Versailles or outside Paris) for a much lower price than individual tickets.

They have automatic ticket machines that have an English language option that take Visa cards (if you have your 4 digit PIN).

metro pass ("carte orange") works by week or month. Careful: not 7 days, but a week (Monday to Sun I think but check it out), so buy at the beginning, not at the end.

cheapest and best way is the subway (metro). goes everywhere, fast (if no strike). One ticket takes you anywhere inside Paris, you can spend the day in the subway with 1 ticket as long as you don't come out

the metro is cheapest- i really liked the metro, it was fast and efficient. There are different lines so you should get a metro map to see which stops you need to go to. ITs AWESOME THOUGH!!!!!

Since you've already gotten answers on how the metro pass works, I'll answer your second question. The cheapest, and most enjoyable, way to travel is walking. It's beautiful to see all the shops and just everything you will pass. When I go there with my family we walk about 5 miles a day, and don't get tired. We dn't go sightseeing, we just like the French atmosphere. We go there for about a month every year. But if you are going somewhere like Notre Dame then I would suggest metro, but you should always take a chance to walk around and look at the city.
