How far away is the Paris Charles de Gaulle International Airport from downtown Paris? |
Additional Details Thanks for the answers so far. Well i have a 4 hour stay there on saturday, so I was considering quickly checking out downtown. Though if it takes an hour each way, there probably isn't enough time.

Not a good idea to go downtown if you only have 4 hours. With no traffic by taxi it will take 45 minutes or an hour. By train it is about the same. If you add the time it takes to get off the plane to a taxi or train, the time to get through security on the way back, and a cushion in case there is traffic, a train strike, or whatever, there will be no time to enjoy Paris.
It's a shame, because the airport is nothing special. There are a few duty free shops and some unimpressive restaurants. |

If you want to visit something typically French during your layover, you could take a taxi to "Le Mesnil Amelot (Centre Ville)". Le Mesnil Amelot is a small, sort of quaint town right next to the airport. But it's definitely not touristy. It's less than a 10 minute taxi ride. There's a hotel in the town, so you could get a taxi ride back from there. |

don't try it!
I know some of people who thought about having coffee downtown and ended up missing their train or plane.
you only should consider it if you are very stress-resistant.

well it depends on how you plan to get there....
by RER (suburban train) it's about 45 minutes. it's not too complicated but with too many pieces of luggage to take care of and the tons of people that can get in there it can be unsafe. that's about 8euros worth one way.
air france offers shuttles to gare de lyon/montparnasse/arc de triomphe which take about 1 hr and are perfectly safe. they're around 12 euro but you can buy a cheaper round-trip.
by cab it's about 1 hr as well but that can go as far up as 45-60 euros. |

it's 40 euros from CDG to Paris Downtown by taxi...
8 euros by train...
and free if you can walk the 30 kms! |

Only a good idea if you're dying to see one specific spot in Paris (like The Place de l'Etoile/Champs Elysees for example; or maybe the Eiffel Tower if you don't get lost taking the metro), and then shoot right back toward the Airport. Otherwise, there is simply not enough time to do anything. Also, the only advisable way of doing this is by RER. Don't attempt it by car. You'll get stuck in traffic.
Either way, this is a stunt for adrenaline junkies only, because you'll be really stressing about the possibility of missing your plane. But hey, every person's idea of fun is different :=)
There is plenty of info on the Airport-to-Paris RER trip on my website http://www.myparistrips.com/paristransport2.html |
