1 liter of alcohol is allowed per person without paying duty on it. I would not suggest you try to smuggle it. If you find that you want to bring back more than you are allowed duty free, you can declare it and pay. The duty is generally about 3% - not worth risking it! See the link below for details.

You can bring back aged cheese, but not fresh cheese. Most of the good French cheeses are aged (anything that has or had a rind is aged), so you should be ok there. Just be careful what cheese you bring back because you may stink up your luggage. Keep it in your carry-on and stick to the hard cheeses which will travel better. Brie and camambert will get smushed and morbier will stink.

As many as you can hide in your luggage or carry on,you fill out a form on the plane declaring what you have, choose to stay silent and it doesntt seem like anyone checks. According to the rules Cheese is a problematic one. Check Rick Steve's guide to Europe he's big on outlining all the rules.

Bring back where?

John
Its not state rules, it is US Customs. I do not know about cheese but liquor it is 1 liter duty free after that you have to pay tax.

There should be no problem with cheese. It is the fresh produce that you wont be able to bring back

" as many as you can fit in your suitcase, carefully wrapped with clothes. Our family brought back approx 20 bottles split up amongst 3 of us. We just did not mention it when asked. Now the cheese is another story. U.S. Customs has dogs to sniff out food, I saw one in action and the lady was nabbed.
