I assume you mean Paris, in whch case 10-14 days to see the major sights, spend some time in each of the major museums, and perhaps take a day trip to Versailles.

If you have little interest in art you could get that down to a week.

That's not my personal choice of how to see Paris which I think should be taken slowly and savoured but I think for many American tourists it is enough.

To see all of France would take months. While it not a very large country by American standards it has a very long history, a great deal of variety, and many regions.

It depends on what you want to do and where you go.
I think that 10 days is correct if you only stay in Paris. But if you want to go in the south of France or visit the Normandy landings, you should foresee more days in France.

two or three weeks.

It is always hard to answer to your question as you don't tell what you are interested in.

A reasonable answer may be :
Paris-Défense : 4-5 days
Versailles Castle : 1 day
Fontainebleau Castle : 1 day
Mont-St-Michel Abbey : 1 day
Loire Castles (Chinon, Azay-le-Rideau, ..) : 3 days
French Riviera (St-Tropez, Nice, Cannes, Monaco, ...): 4 days
Massif Central : 3 days
Alps : 3 days
Pyrenées + Toulouse + Bordeaux (wine + town) + Lourdes (Pilgrimage) + Biarritz : 4 days

The visits may include the World Heritage sites which are in the different areas.

Nothing, Americans are not welcome in France. I lived in Germany my whole life until 6 years ago and had to listen to 100% of all Americans who came to Darmstadt say how glad they were to get to a place where they were not treated like terd.
