personally I find it very safe but then again pick pockets are pretty rampant especially if you have a lot of bags or you are in or near a train station. I've only had one or 2 problems after living there for 3 years, taking the metro every day several times a day, same for my girlfriend.

Mrs Jojo's answer is pretty good. The one time someone tried to pick my pocket, it was a group of young kids around 10 years old, late at night in an empty metro, some standing in front of me to limit my movement, while another one (behind me) opened a newspaper and hid his hand underneath to go for my wallet. But they didn't get it as soon as I found all this bizarre I put my hand on my wallet.

If you have a purse, carry it on your shoulder, under your arm and make sure it is closed. If you have a wallet, I put mine in the front pants pocket (and in crowded places I tend to keep my hand there) and never in a jacket.

Just have your eyes open, that's all.

Enjoy the tower and Paris.

Generally safe, HOWEVER, please be on guard for snippy, eurotrash waiters who think Americans are the Le Poo under their feet. Even if you are spending your benjamins in their snootie country. Hmmphh!

Metro is very safe. I always take the metro at 11pm or midnight, and it is still crowded. For me, the security in the metro is not a problem, but the problem is if you go out from the metro tunnel at 11pm and you must to walk to your appartement, and the street is dark ... You must be more careful

It's not going to be much worse than any other city. Mrs. Doubtfire is a Xenophobe!

I once raced across Paris with my mother and 4 suitcases at 3 a.m. and people couldn't have been more helpful.

Just be sensible: don't wave money, maps or your mobile around - move to a different seat if you are uncomfortable, and don't linger in isolated, poorly lit areas.

Have fun!

I'm predicting it's not as safe as usual due to the protest that are going on in Paris right now over jobs. I heard on the news lasts night that the metro was running less frequently there yesterday because workers went to protest.

The metro's in Paris are generally safe, you should watch out for pick pockets though, try to sit close to the doors in case you need to make a quick getaway. Do not miss that 11:30pm train because the last train leaves around 1:00am.
The name of the train station closest to the Eiffel tower is 'bir hakeim'.
I lived in Paris for 2 years.
