How would an American male be treated in France?

In general?

In general, no differently than a Bulgarian or Greek or English male.

The notion that the French are difficult to get a long with or outright rude, especially to Americans, is more an urban legend than anything else.

I would say that an American male who goes to France and doesn't modify his behavior from the American norm may find he offends people as social norms do differ in France.

The French are more low key than Americans and being loud or boisterous is frowned on. The immediate assumption of intimacy is not the French way. The slap on the back, hale fellow, macho posturing that is common in the United States is unnerving to the French. Indeed, the American habit of constantly smiling is regarded as a sign of either lunacy or mental retardation.

Just dial it all back a notch, dress neatly and act conservatively, keep your voice down and spend more time listening than talking and you'll get along perfectly well.

From what I've gathered by talking to other people from foreign countries, and even about France, the way you will be treated will differ on an individual basis. Most people say they bump into little trouble in foreign countries and might bump into a snotty person once in a while. It's the same for any foreign person visiting the States. It really depends on where you go and who you bump into.
