I'll only be in Paris for one day...? |
I'll be there just a few days before Christmas. We plan on arriving very early and leaving as late as possible. What do you think the ultimate must see's in Paris are and do you think its possible to see as many places as possible in one day? Also will there be any cool markets, festivals, anything seeing as its right around Christmas? |

Obviously you can't see everything in a day or even in a month and what constitutes a must see is purely a matter of your personal decision. Further, its going to be difficult to reconcile the desire to see lots of tourist sights with wandering around Christimas markets.
A fairly standard list of "must see" toursit destinations would include:
Notre Dame
La Sainte Chapelle
Pont Alexandre III (the most beautiful bridge in the world)
Conciergerie
Louvre Museum
Palais Royal
Musee d'Orsay
Invalides (tomb of Napoleon)
Sacre Coeur and Montmartre
Tuileries gardens
Eiffel Tower
Arc de Triomphe
Pantheon
Cluny Museum (art of the middle ages)
Place des Vosges (oldest square in Paris)
Centre Pompidou (Museum of Modern Art)
Musée du quai Branly (non-european art and culture)
Place de la Concorde
Forum des Halles
Jardin du Luxembourg
Opera Garnier (the old opera house)
Grand Palais and Petit Palais
Orangerie
Jeu de Paum
L'église de la Madeleine
Le Palais Bourbon
As for Christimas Markets there are many. some are in the following locations.
Les Halles
Marche de la Cour de Rome in front of the Saint Lazare train station.
Saint-Germains-des-Pres
Montparnasse (near the shopping centre in Maine Montparnasse.)
Place Saint-Sulpice |

In one day in Paris I did Arch D' Triumph, Hotel des Invalides (and snuck into the Napoleon tomb area for free by the back door), Notre Dame, the Lovre (I can write a book, how to do the Lovre in 2 hours or less), the Eiffel Tower, and a Cabernet Show. Then we did a club for late night. You can do as much as you can run - we jogged the streets of Paris and saw everything (the second day - we had two - we went to Versailles). I don't know about festivals/markets, but I'm sure there will be plenty. |

Obviously referring to a major capital city, not a backwater in Bush country.
The convention is, when referring to capital cities, you don't need to say what country (or state) it's in.
Just getting in a jibe at the cowboy who posted an answer a couple of posts above.
I wouldn't actually go up the Eiffel Tower - the line would take too big a chunk out of the short time you have. But certainly look at it from the bottom, and walk around the whole Champs de Mars and Trocadero area. Then make your way to the Arc de Triomphe and Champs Elysees. Take a metro to the Sacre Coeur. Then a metro to Notre Dame. From there you can walk down Saint Michel, the Boulevard St Germain and make your way to the chrismas market at St Sulpice.
If you manage all that in one day, you'll go away feeling it's worth coming again to see all the other things on the list. |

the EIffel Tower for sure. (Bir Hakiem on the metro)
and if you are looking to meet people it is a great place to go.
I went there 4 times while i was there for a month and i met boys each time.
It never fails.
By far night is the best time to go.
During the day the Garnier Opera House is a great place to visit, it is absolutely stunning and has a perfume factory and great shopping all around it. |

To be careful, the airport Roissy Charles de Gaulle is at one hour from Paris. The Airport Orly, at 30 minutes.
For your move in Paris,
If there is sun, I recommend you to use the "veli'b" (rent bike by town hall of Paris, it's not expensive), otherwise, use the subway.
I propose you a idea of way here

in one day, i did the eiffel tower (didnt't climb in though coz i was on my own!), the louvre, jardin de tuileries, champs elysées, and went up to montmartre to see the sacre coeur, moulin rouge and some places that were in the film Amelie. I was working as an au pair and only had 5 hours off......so i think it is do-able! Paris is beautiful...make sure that you leave enough time for just strolling by the seine and listening to the french accordion music on the bridges.
Have a good trip! |
