I went to Paris last summer and it was great.
It's definitely best to stay in districts 1-6 (5&6 are in the Latin Quarter and 2 is where the Louvre is). I was lucky enough to stay in the 2nd district.
When looking at hotels, the last number in the zipcode is the district number.
1-6 are in central Paris, and as mentioned before, if you stay in central Paris, there are virtually Metro stops around every corner (almost).
It may take a while, but you should be able to find cheap hotels in those districts.
Search and compare prices of travel sites (best => hotwire.com) and you'll find a cheap one.
Good luck! |

Almost every address in central Paris is close to a metro so that need not concern you.
Cheap means different things to different people.
I think the Hotel St. Andre des Arts is "cheap" with doubles from 89 euros (breakfast and taxes included). http://www.123france.co.uk/en/0/hotel-saint-andre-des-arts-paris_486_en/index.html
Cheaper is the Hotel Tiquetonne with doubles from 50 euros (taxes included but no breakfast). http://www.eurocheapo.com/paris/hotel/hotel-tiquetonne.html |

Paris hostels are HORRIBLE! better to go for a 2star hotel.
As was mentioned...Hotel Tiquetonne is great.
I stayed there and would definitely go back. you can choose shower in your room or in the hall. 2 blocks from the metro-great location in the 2nd arrondissement. nearby restaurants also.
Only drawback: the hotel closes its door at 12:00 am, so if you're not there, you're locked out until morning.
Book ASAP--often filled up long in advance. |

Hotel Des Arts In Montmartre. I have a few that I like. But this is a great neighborhood, historic, and access to the metro is good. Bad is you are in Montmartre and a 10 to 15 minute metro ride to central Paris. But If you want a true Paris Experience, in a real working Neighborhood, that does have tourist attributes and want to spend less around 100 a night USD... I would pick here. You take risks of more unpleasantness by American standards if you spend less. best of luck. |
