3-4 hours from Paris is already a lot. Good places to visit will depend on exactly where you are located.
Here are some interesting areas within 1 hour drive (more or less) from Paris:
South East and East of Paris
- Castle and forest of Fontainebleau
- Moret sur Loing and Barbizon near the forest
- Vaux le vicomte castle and Blandy les Tours castle nearby
- Crecy la Chapelle and the Vallée du Grand Morin
- Provins medieval city
- Vincennes castle
South West and West of Paris
- Rambouillet castle and wildlife park
- Castle of Sauvage nearby
- Vallée de Chevreuse and nearby: castles of Breteuil and Dourdan, Abbaye des Vaux de Cernay
- Versailles park and castle
- Chartres cathedral
North of Paris
- Abbaye de Royaumont (north of Paris)
- Castle and Grandes Ecuries of Chantilly
- Castle of Pierrefonds
- Compiègne WWWI museum and german armistice place at Rethondes
- Beauvais cathedral |

Well.. I lived in France a long time(6 years) and have been all over. Some places that people would die to go to are: Paris itself. I suppose you have to go there just to say you have been IN PARIS. But it is NO LONGER a fun place to go to. But, if you go to Paris, go to the Louvre which is down at the end of the Champs d'ylessee... See the Eiffle tower of course.. then get out of Paris. I love the train and metro system in Paris/France. Get a train to Chartres... then to Tours(not in that order) and when in the Toures and Blois area, visit the Voovray Wine area there.. Take the train south to the Rivierra.. a beautiful place with all of its imported sand beaches. There re also so many beautiful chateaus.. My favorite is chambord which is not too far from Orleans. I have been there many times. Try to EAT in the little places and not those places where all the tourists go to. There are so many more things to say to you but space does not allow. |

Stacks of stuff in Paris - Eiffel tower, Montmartre, Sacre Coeur, Champs Elysses, art galleries by the shedload.
Outside Paris, Palace of Versailles and gardens, and to the west, Giverny the home and studio of Monet. Have Fun! |

it all depends on what you are looking to get outta of your trip. Are you traveling alone? France like all of Europe is scattered with history. Paris is beautiful, and I must say you must take a boat tour. travel by train, its beautful, and make sure you try different food from each region.
P.S the Mcdonalds is the freak best ever. . .make ours look like Jack in the Box. |

Take train to Italy to explore another country. You can go to Versailles, France if you want some history tripping. If you want to see kings palace, museums, or to to southern France, Nice... just expensive but really cool to see the French Riviera |

Just wondering

I just got back from Paris, and it was lovely there in springtime, with all the trees budding and flowers blooming. There are so many beautiful places to visit in Paris. I would suggest you read a guidebook. It will take several hours to get a small taste of the huge Louvre Museum. If you like Impressionism, try the Musee D'Orsay. It is terrific and can be seen in just a few hours. Wear comfortable shoes, and take a walk around the city center and visit the Cathedral of Notre Dame, the cathedral of Sainte Chapelle, the Place du Carrousel, the Jardin des Tuileries, the Place de la Concorde, the Hotel des Invalides, the Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower and the Sacre Cour church on Montmartre. You can get to any of these places on the fabulous Metro subway, which is fast, cheap and easy. If you pay to go up the Eiffel Tower and/or the Arc de Triomphe, you will see fabulous views of Paris. The Jardin du Luxembourg is also very pretty. I have heard the underground tour of the catacombs is a terrific thing to do in the summer because it is fascinating and much cooler than above ground. If you have the chance, visit Giverny near Paris and see the beautiful garden and home of the painter Claude Monet. I love Paris. It is a great place to visit again and again. Bon voyage! |
