Berets are worn mostly by French soldiers and WW2 veterans attending Armistice Day ceremonies (Veterans Day in the US). Go with an open mind. Though France is a western country, it will be different than what you are used to. You've got to have some pastries and hot, freshly baked bread! But don't be surprised if the clerk grabs the food with her bare hands (I've never seen them use wax or tissue paper). If this bothers you, pick a pastry with a paper liner already on the bottom. They tend to grab the paper liner. Whenever you travel, be alert (not just in France, anywhere). Do not get drunk in a strange town. You can carry a map, but keep it in your pocket and take it out only when you need to look up something. Be polite. Speak French as much as you can. If you need to speak English, ask politely if the French person speaks English. Don't discuss touchy subjects like the occupation of France by Germany during WW 2. France has recovered very well and is still very much a world power today. Better yet, don't discuss politics. Have a great time! |

Cheese eating surrender monkeys - buy peanuts - in many public places beret, garlic and baguette are mandatoy -
It is the basis of chic and etiquette - to bring your frog is a pledge of humour - otherwise white flags flip-flap everywhere to greet US tourists - |

what do you mean? you won't have a culture shock as if you were going to India or Japan. We have the same habits as other European countries (very similar to the American culture if that's where you're from) we have nothing special...I only suggest you not to idealize too much, or you will be disappointed. bienvenue! |

Sorry to disappoint you, but no beret, no garlic, no frogs. You'll find old buildings with a modern infrastructure, people slimmer than in the US. People speak French. Food is different, prices might surprise you, with the actual exchange rate France is becoming expensive. |
