You will have a great time there!!
Some useful phrases are:
Oui : yes
Non: no
S'il vous plaît: Please
Je voudrais.....: I would like (whatever you want)
Où est....: Where is...
Comment allez-vous?: How are you?
À quelle heure a-t-il? : What time is it?
I am not sure what else you would find useful, but hopefully these will help. I am not good at saying how to pronounce them without saying it to you, so this website might work for pronounciation help:
http://demo.acapela-group.com/
Also, there are many websites I am sure that would have french phrases for travelers, I would google it. Also there are books at the book store or library that might help.
Hope this helps!
Also, just to add, those translators online do not give correct translations most of the time. :) |

Go to Barnes and Noble or other book store and ask for a book with phrases for people travelling to France. Also would be even better to get some cd's to listen to over the next few weeks so you can practice pronounciation. |

If I were you, I'd get a pocket sized phrase book with an audio cd and listen to and repeat the phrases as many times as possible before you leave to get used to the accents and language. Although pronunciation isn't that important as long as you try. Also most of the people speak some sort of English.
Some important phrases include:
Ou sont les toilettes? : Where are the bathrooms?
Ou est...? - Where is...?
...la poste : ...the post office
...la supermarche : the supermarket (similar to a local grocery store)
J'ai besion de... : I need...
Aidez-moi! : Help me!
Merci. : Thank you.
Bonne chance et Bon Voyage (Good luck and good travels!) |

This venue won't help you much. Although French is a completely phonetic language so that anyone who knows it can pronounce any word that written, you have to know the phonics to do that.
Find someone who knows how to Speak French. Pay them if you have to, but learn the phrases written above along with, "you are so kind" --Vous etes tres gentile. 10 or 12 phrases and a simple dictionary that you can carry around will help. I've seen French phrase T-shirts which are printed upside down so you can read them while wearing them. Look around. |

Getting a book with audio and being very polite are two of your best bets as suggested above.
Also, excuse yourself for not speaking French and if you've learned other languages in the past, let them know so that they can appreciate the fact that you understand a little of a language other than English.
Most importantly, when you speak in English to the French, please articulate clearly and don't speak too quickly! Avoid using any "play with words" expressions (playing with word sounds, etc.) or humorist expression because much of the comprehension and the humor won't be understood.
Don't worry if anyone is rude, the French are rude to each other.

Try to find a phrase book and some cds at your local book store. It really helps to speak some French in France.
Un comme ca-- "Ungh come sah" -- that one please (great in bakeries)
Avez-vous un wc? Avay voo ungh vay say? -- do you have a restroom (WC is the English abbreviation for water closet)?
S'il vous plait actually means "please"-- un carafe d'eau, s.v.p. means "a carafe of water (tap water) please." According to French law, a restaurant must provide you with a free carafe of tap water at your request if you order some food.
Service compris-- means tip included (or no need to tip extra). If it doesn't say this, then the restaurant has the right to add 18% tip to the bill. If they add the 18% tip, you do not have to add any additional tip on top of that.
A phrase book will give you more ideas. The CDs or tapes will help you with pronounciation. Try to pronounce words as accurately as possible. If you mispronounce the words, a lot of ppl won't understand you. If you are in a big city, you might be able to find a crash course in French (Berlitz, Alliance Francaise, etc.). Don't get too stressed out and have a great trip. Bon voyage! |

I was actually surprised by how few people spoke English when my cousin and I visited France. I can read French ok, but I found it hard to tell what was being said. Knowing some good basic phrases will really help you out.
The main places you will probably end up needing to converse with someone who doesn't speak english is at a small hotel or in a restaurant or shop like several people have alreayd mentioned.
One phrase I found really helpful if someone tried to ask me something that I didn't understand was
Je ne comprends pas - I don't understand
Je ne parle pas francais tres bein - I don't speak french very well
Oui- Yes
Non-No
D'accord - OK
Merci- Thank you
Merci bien- Another more formal way to say thank you
As long as you try, people are understanding for the most part. |

Here it is. I stayed for a week and I only knew a handful of words.
Bon Jour = A must when you enter a shop or cafe. It is considered rude not to greet when entering.
Aur Revior - Also considered polite when you leave a shop or cafe.
Merci - Thanks for something
S'il vous plaît = Sorry
Pardon = Excuse me. (Try not to use Excusez-moi)
Je voudrais = I'd like
Also, try to get the numbers 1-10 down. It helps when ordering something at a cafe or supermarket.
Honestly, after that I was able to bluff my way through the rest. |
