There are many hotels on the left bank. As they are older and the rooms differ, one hotel can have many rates.

Etats-Unis just behind the Opéra. Try the Gare du Nord area. Reasonably priced but still clean, and the area is vibrant - multi-cultural.

I recommend that you check out a hotel chain called "Formule 1"
These hotels have simple, but clean rooms average price is from 28-35 Euros per night. We use them for an inexpensive place to stay in France, and in other places in Europe as well. We have never had a problem with them. There are several in the Parisienne region.
Have Fun! Hey don't miss the Eiffel Tower (lit up at night is the best) and Montmartre ( the artists square) behind the Sacre Coeur Cathedral. They are great!

There are quite a few a couple of minutes from the Arc, but beware, it's quite a noisy area. We stayed in a back street place which was comforable enough.
