Bum Gravy.
1) Learn French.

Nos. 2 to 10) ask the locals in French about the best things to do.

I've always found that if you speak French when in France, even badly, they appreciate it.

All these daft stories you hear about French people not liking the English or not being friendly are spread by English people who speak loudly at foreign types.

I have always had a good time in France, partly from exploring, but mostly from meeting French people.

Ok, I live in the Auvergne, so this one is fun!

1. Take a trip up to the top of Le Puy de Dome, a dormant volcano with a stunning view of the "chaine des Puys" a grouping of other dormant volcanos that looks like a moonscape.

2. Visit the Foret de Troncais, 11000 hectares of (mainly) oak forest, with walks, and swimming lakes.

3. Visit Bourbon L'archambault and take a tour of the thermal baths, the casino and the Forteresse. If you are here for the 14th July watch the fireworks at the Forteresse, it is a re-enactment of the revolution complete with music and lights.

4. Visit Chaudes-Aigues home of the hottest natural springs in Europe. Also the museum of Géothermia which tells of the history.

5. Visit the fortified town of Marcolès in the Cantal department. It has buildings from the 13th century and is a fascinating place to explore.

6. Visit the caves at St Nectaire "Les mystères de Farges". There are loads of things to do here, including seeing how St Nectaire cheese is kept (A lot more interesting than it sounds, honest!)

7. Dine at the Auvergne's only 3 star michelin restaurant "Le Clos des Cimes" in St Bonnet le Froid.

8. Go Kayaking through the Gorges de L'Allier.

9. Follow the Route des Métiers (the trades road) with visits to loads of the local typical tradespeople
of the Livraidos Forest area. Based at St Gervais this is a list of about 35 different artisans, from Crystal works to Essential Oil makers.

10. Visit the Hautes-Chaumes moors area of the Livraidos Forest and see all the Auvergnes rare plants and animals, including carnivourous plants.

1) Visit the gardens of the Chateau de Cordès, designed by Le Nôtre
2) The Cathedral of Notre Dame at Le Puy. An example of Romanesque architecture, the massive cathedral of Notre Dame shows strong Byzantine and Arabic influences in both its construction and decoration.
3) The Garabit viaduct, one of the first constructions built by Gustave Eiffel.
4) The Bourbon l'Archambault chateau
5) The Roche chateau
6) The Parentignat chateau
7) Tour the various well preserved old towns including Charroux, Saint-Saturnin, Saint-Floret, Montpeyroux, Usson, Tournemire and Lavaudieu
8) Go to the Festival of Chaise Dieu (website: http://www.chaise-dieu.com/cgi-bin/index_en.php4)
9) Go to the World cultures Festival (website: http://www.gannat.com/gannat/en/festival.asp)
10) Visit Vulcania, a museum and exhibition concerning vocanoes (website: http://www.vulcania.com/)
