I think it depends on where you have been and who you have met. All the french don't speak english ! It's even usually hard for french people to speak another language than french, because, I think, that we are quite lazy for that and don't practise enough so we are shy to speak something else than french. But some of us have good english and enjoy to practise it so it's probably why people have talked to you in english. But as said in other answers if you speak french and french people talk to you in english, you can reply in french and so everyone is happy. But for my part, if someone start to speak with me in french I will reply in french. If the other has some difficulties to say what he means, I will probably help him and show him that I speak english... |

I think they either want to practice their English or maybe they want to make it easier on you and therefore speak to you in your native language |

Keep speaking to them in French anyway, then both of you can practise. |

You will get a more accurate response if you post this question in French on the French pages. Otherwise any one of six -
1 Your French is perfect but people hate you.
2 You only ever speak to Anglophones.
3 They are being friendly.
4 Your French is awful.
5 They want to improve their English.
6 You have mistaken somewhere like Dorset for France (easy mistake).

I've found that this is most common with barmen and waiters in tourist areas - basically it's a result of there being so many tourists who don't speak French, that they just get into the habit. If you persist in speaking French then most will switch to French, and if they don't then don't worry about it - it's nothing personal. |

Basically if you go to a big, bustling city, full of tourists and such, for example, Paris, the French love to practice their English as well. There are many different type of people in Paris, and English what most know so thats what the natives will speak. Everyone above me is right, and if you want to practice your French, try going to cities that have less tourists, and speak French, they'd love to speak their language with you as well! And what they'd love more is you TRYING to speak their language, its a sign of respect for them. So, afterall, you didnt learn French for nothing!!! Embrace that youve learned it, as French is a very beautiful languge, and is one of the top spoken languages of the world! Good luck :) |
