Hard question to answer if you do not tell from where you are travelling and what citizenship you have.

If you are a non-European citizen or a citizen of Denmark, Ireland or the United Kingdom you would need a passport to travel from your country to Paris by train.
If you are a citizen of other EUEEA countries or of Switzerland you would just need your government issued national ID card to go to Paris.
If you are a UK resident and hold a passport of another country you may even need a visa in addition to your passport.

@marymiss:
may I tell you that the United Kingdom for example is not a member country of the Schengen agreement concerning border-less travel and every passport of train travellers between the UK and France is checked by Immigration Police or Border Agency Officers.
@PeyerG:
Since trains are crossing borders in Europe travelers are required to have the appropriate travel documents beneth their tickets!!!!!!
@sashmead2001:
The fact that internal border controls have been abolished does not constitute a right to travel without proper documents.

Where are you starting from ?

If you start from the UK then yes as the UK is not a signatory to the Schengen Agreement. From within the Schengen area you will still need photo ID so you might as well carry your passport.

Yes

Peyer G
You need a identification card, that normally in a american is passport.
But in train you only need Ticket!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Butterfly Girl xXx
Yes you need a passport to enter a country outside of the UK

Leo B
Yes, they'll check at the gate in St Pancras. If you don't have a passport I'd suggest getting one soon, there can often be a wait for them to send it to you (though when I realised I'd lost my passport a day before I was due to travel they did a 1-day service for £120)...check out http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/index.asp for an online form and information for your nearest office.

askingu
yes, a passport will be needed unless you hide in a box!

A N Mouse
Yes

I don't know which country you're in so:

If you're travelling by eurostar from the UK then yes, you will need to present a passport when checking in.

If you are travelling from a country inside the Schengenland, that is, all of the countries bordering France, plus more, such as Portugal, then no you won't, since these countries have made an agreement to abolish border controls.

depends on your nationality: if you are citizen of a country member of EU-Shengen, you can use your national ID card. If not, yes, you do need a passport.

However, since you are traveling by train, chances of getting checked at the border are very slim.

Yes, if you are travelling outside of your country you will always need a passport, no matter what method of travel you are using.

KrazyMuddles
yes, you always need a passport to go into another country. No matter how you get there.

no not in the european union. any type of identification with your picture on it will do. in countries like germany ,i.d is compulsory and you get fined if you don t carry one on you. it does also save a lot hassles if you need some kind of identification. even if it is just to book into a hotel. you would believe the amount of people that are only assured if you can produce identification.

Yes, a passport is needed to leave or enter a country, no matter what transportation method is being used (Ex: Car, train, plane, boat)
