The train is great if you have time to see the countryside, but you can take a 45 minute flight on Air France from Paris to Nice and it may only cost you $50 euros one way. Just make sure it's a "vol bleu"-these are specially reduced rates. Then, rent a car. You get to see what you want and can be more flexible in your itinerary.
Don't do a bus tour: they're overpriced and you end up eating at McDonald's-yuck.
While in the South, head towards Toulouse and do a day/night in Carcassonne. It's a medieval fortressed city (was used in the filming of Robin Hood and Monty Pythons' Holy Grail) that is still inhabited today. Toulouse is a beauiful city with a Spanish influence. I'm not a huge fan of Nice, Cannes, etc-they can be expensive and too touristy. Go to Bandol, Juan-les-pins instead.
Make sure too that while in the south, you try some of the best regional dishes such as soupe au pistou (like a minestrone), soupe au poisson (a good fish soup), salade niçoise (salad with tuna, hard boiled eggs, tomatoes, green beans), cassoulet (white bean stew with lots of meat-this is a toulousian dish).
Bon voyage! |

Three words: EURO-RAIL PASS. Best way to get around any country in Europe, and also the most economical. If you want to know what to visit, pick up a copy of "France for Dummies" before you go. Lots of good info on what to see and what you can skip. |
