I believe you actually have to leave the EU for a minimum of 90 days as well. You cannot simply leave the EU and come back in to restart your visa.

I presume as long as you exit the country and have your passport stamped when you leave, you shouldn't have any problem returning... There may be a minimum time limit (You could ask at the American Embassy, it's near the Madeleine, very easy to find)

I thought you had to leave anywhere in Europe after three months, before being able to return.

If I were you, I would go to Florence, Italy instead.

I think you have to go outside the "Schengen" zone, which is a no-immigration check area for a number of EU states. (The EU is actually a CUSTOMS-free area, and not borderless for human entry.)

Netherlands and France have no immigration border as per the Schengen agreement, so you won't get any new tourist visa by going there and back. The UK and Switzerland are NOT party to Schengen, so that is why someone advised you to go there. The advise is right.

(PS. Ireland will work, as well as any non-EU country, like Morocco, Tunisia)

You have to leave the EU... you can go to switzerland if you can't afford a trip farther away. If I were you though I'd fly south to morocco or the canary islands

Mel
You need to get out of the EU. Andorra or Switzerland would work. My friend had to do that when she was working in Spain.
