Wearing good quality walking shoes with proper arch supports is really the way to go. Paris is a very walkable city and you'll find that after seeing one sight the next is just a few blocks away so you'll be walking a lot. Even walking around in museums with marble floors will play havoc with your feet if you don't have proper shoes.
It also is rather damp and you should expect at least a brief downpour every other day you are there since it rains, on average, 17 days out of 30 in April. So, in addition to proper water proof walking shoes, you should carry an umbrella or rain slicker. One of those little travel slickers that folds up into its own tiny poach is a great thing to have.
Jeans are fine, especially for the young, but consider that with all the rain that jeans dry rather slowly. So some cotton slacks might be a better choice. Oxford cloth is a good choice for your shirt.
Pick dark or muted colors for your clothing. You'll blend in better. Take a look at these photos of people at a club in Paris. Notice how many are wearing black/white and how monochromatic everyone seems to dress. http://www.jeudionly.com/galerie/2009_04_02/page01.htm |

According to the weather forecast for Paris next week, it's going to be in the 60s for the high and have periods of rain. That being said, definitely bring an umbrella (although once the first drop of rain falls from the sky, the umbrella sales men are out in full force).
However, the most important item of clothing that you can pack is a pair of comfortable walking shoes. Born shoes are very comfortable, as are SoftSpots and, my favorite, New Balance. They have New Balance tennis shoes that have more of the European-look (like Pumas), now so you don't look quite so obvious. But sometimes you feel like a tourist, sometimes you don't. The cobblestones of Versailles are not forgiving if you're wearing a pair of heels. If you're going to be doing a lot of walking, go with comfort first. Bring band-aids for blisters.
I've seen a lot of Parisians wearing jeans, so as long as they're not acid-washed, you're fine. There is a prevalent of black in the fashion of Parisians that I have seen. But they spice it up with splashes of color, particularly red. You can buy a cute scarf anywhere in Paris (best spot is on Rue de Rivoli, one of the best places to buy souvenirs in Paris--across from the Tuileries Garden).
You can wear your Oxford shirt with either jeans or black pants and still look classy. Bring something a bit dressy in case you want to go to the Opera or to a fabulous restaurant for dinner. Don't wear a lot of expensive jewelry, though! My mom had a bracelet "lifted" off her arm in the crowded Metro. Don't forget either a money belt or a neck pouch to keep valuables in. And always keep your luggage locked in your room! (Better safe than sorry!) |

My one suggestion is that you wear the most comfortable shoes that you have, jeans are fine but you might feel a bit uncomfortable in them because Parisians dress so nicely. We were in Paris for a week and after a couple of days my feet, legs, and back were aching due to wearing shoes that were not comfortable (even though they were tennis shoes). Have fun! |
