I agree with Timothy, When you go to a country you should find local friends it is the only way to learn the language.
I went to live in France for 2.5 years and purposely avoided English speakers as I do when I go over on holiday.
It is a lovely country with such a lot to do and see.
You will find that when you try to be friendly and try to speak their language they are very helpful.
I once lived in Cape Town Where the English expats had their club, the Germans and Swiss had theirs and so on.
I could not stand that.
Having said that. In the Dordogne there are some towns where the British have even got into the town Council and in one case a British Mayor. They play cricket on the town green every Sunday and around Sarlat you can find the local French newspaper translated into English. |

If you live in France you might want to try making friends with the natives rather than isolating yourself in a group of dry old ex pats. How long have you been there and do you intend to stay?
I don't mean to come across harsh but you hear so many English people on here moaning about immigrants not integrating. |

Whereabouts are you? I have home in France that I visit regularly. The expat Brits there are a very open and welcoming lot, and some have friends amongst the French.
A short answer is: Learn french and just be prepared to chat to people. It will take time! |

Have you tried the Paris Voice and FUSAC (France USA Contacts), both of which are geared towards the English-speaking community in Paris? The former is likely to be more up your alley in terms of calling attention to social and cultural events, while the latter is admittedly more for people seeking work, housing, etc- though it also has personal ads, many involving people just looking to make friends. If you like to mingle, you might consider English bookstores and pubs in Paris, as well.

Maybe you could go to the mairie and ask for getting part of an association or having adresses of Brits who live around you. |

Can't help you unless you say where you live, that kind of association is usually organised on a local level, not a country wide one. |
