I want to move to France for one year, what do i need to do? |
I spent a semester in Annecy France in high school, and I want to go back once i'm finished with college. So:
1) How expensive are visas?
2) How easy will it be for me to get a job. Something where I will be speaking english is preferable. (my french is decent, but not perfect)
3)What else do I need to know?
thank you! |

1. It depends on the type of visa you need. I believe I paid 35$ for my short term student visa 5 years ago. I came back 2 years ago as a language assistant (sponsored by the French government) so my Visa was free.
2. It will not be easy for you to get a job for many reasons. You would really need to be bilingual in English and French. There are some minor exceptions of course. Unemployment in France is high and employment laws are strict. French citizens get priority in hiring, then EU citizens, and then everyone else. Hiring "anyone else" is very expensive and a lengthy process. If you could start working in a US company and then get transferred to France it would be easier. Your work visa/ carte de sejor/ then work permit would be paid for by the company and you wouldn't have to worry about this French hiring process. It also depends on what you're studying and what kind of experience you have. Internships typically do not count as professional experience in France (with the exception of engineering)
3. The easiest way for you to come back to France would be as a student or a language assistant. A student visa would allow you to improve your French, but you can also work 12, 15, or 18 hours per week (depending on visa). Once you already have this permission to work, you don't have to go through the hassles I mentioned above (First French, then EU, then everyone else). A language assistant would also allow you to improve your French. You work 12 hours a week in a French primary or secondary school. You are able to choose 3 Academies (rough equivalent of school district, but on a larger scale) where you would like to be placed and then you are randomly placed within one. After taxes you earn about 750 euros per month. You are eligible for French social security and health insurance. You have 6 weeks of paid vacation. The program runs from 1st October to 30 April for most; some contracts are 9 months rather than 7. I was a language assistant for 2 years. I knew French well before, but after this 2 year experience I'm now fluent and have been able to get a job in my field.
The link for assistant information is below. Keep in mind to be an assistant in October 2009 you need to apply in December 2008/January 2009.
