Hey, according to my research, the chaumont you are obvoiusly looking for is about 270km southeast of Paris. The airbase where you father may have been stationed was Chaumont-Semoutiers Air Base, and this is located two miles south west of the city of chaumont. Hope this is helpful |

I lived for a long time in Chaumont (Département de Haute-Marne) and still have some relatives there !
The air force base you are talking about is Semoutier right outside Chaumont (some 5 miles distance or so, on the RN67 , south west )
On Google earth: 48° 06' 30" N - 05° 08' 30" E
The city is a very little and calm country side "prefecture".
Has no big industry or university ...
