You can travel nicely while watching your expenses. First of all, stay in bed and breakfasts. European bed and breakfasts are not what we call bed and breakfasts in the US. Theirs usually consist of 20-30 rooms. If you want a private bath, you need to make sure you get an en suite room. If you don't, you'll share a bath. En suite is more expensive, but usually worth it. Chain hotels are very expensive. Bed and breakfasts can be very nice. Do your homework on them. I recommend tripadvisor.com. you'll be able to see reviews from people who have actually stayed there.

As far as food, it's not so bad. If you plan to have a seat in a restaurant with full service at every meal, you will need to prepare to spend heftily. Instead, you can have lots of meals at street cafes. We usually catch a light crepe, a sandwich, or salad. If you are doing lots of sight-seeing, you won't want to spend a lot of time in restaurants, anyway. Not sure if you've traveled in europe, but there are no :) refills. A cup of coffee is a cup of coffee, as are tea and soft-drinks.

A good thing is that menu prices include tax and gratuity. If the service has been just oustanding, you might leave a one euro piece on the table. Hotels, too, have a flat fee.

Paris is a compact city and best seen by doing a lot of walking so transportation costs will usually consist of no more than a few trips on the Metro every day. If you buy Metro tickets in books of ten (called a "carnet") then the price for each ticket is only 1.11 euros. I rarely use public transportation more than 3 or 4 times a day so figure on less than 5 euros per person per day for transportation.

Food costs vary widely but on a moderate budget would be no more than 10-12 euros per person for lunch and 25-35 euros per person for dinner. Of course it is possible to spend much less than this if you choose but food is one of the great highlights of a trip to Paris.

Especially if you are Asian you may enjoy sampling the food in the Asian quarter of Paris. There are actually two, the largest is in the 13th arrondissement by the place d'Italie between and around the avenue d'Ivry and avenue de Choisy streets, east of the rue de Tolbiac. The second is in Belleville, in the northeastern section of the city. Both areas have many restaurants and food prices are very low (by Parisian standards).

The Euro is much stronger against the dollar right now so it costs more than usual. Last time we went to Paris the food was very expensive and the hotels were about average for Europe prices. Summer costs are very high. I'd plan at least 20$ for each of you per meal. You can walk a lot of places or take one of the tours offered by the hotels for transportation. The metro (subway) is not that expensive.

Paris is very expensive. A room will be much smaller and much more expensive that what you get in the States. Food is not much different but beverages are VERY expensive. A glass of soda pop is around 4 Euros - or 6 dollars.
