I take it you mean the "rue de faubourg" (note spelling) but can't tell if you mean Rue du Faubourg du Temple, Rue du Faubourg PoissonniÃ¨re, Rue du Faubourg Saint-Martin, or Rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis, all of which are in the 10th arrondissement. Please clarify. I will assume you mean Rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis since that is the closest to the Gare du Nord. While Paris is a generally safe city the area you indicate is somewhat less safe than other areas especailly at night when it may be frequented by prostitutes. Use care when traveling in the evening.

The RER (RÃ©seau Express RÃ©gional) is a light rail system that is integrated into the Metro (subway) system. One can transfer freely between the RER and the Metro.

There are a variety of transport passes. The one day transit pass is called a Mobilis and is sold at all Metro and RER ticket booths and at Tabacs (cafes licensed to sell cigarettes, bus passes and literry tickets).

Paris is a great city for walking. If you would rather not, or if you have to go a long distance, there is a terrific subway system (the Metropolitan or "Metro" for short). RER is a rail line that connects Paris to the suburbs.

Streetwise publishes a great map of the city which includes a Metro map. You can find them at many bookstores. I've bought them at Borders and I'm quite sure that Barnes and Noble has them as well. I always carry one of these with me.

Yeah. I don't' know if this still applies today. But don't' plug in American appliances at some of those hotels due to a difference in wattage's. resulting in fires and blowing out fuses.

If you are really into culture, get a green Guide Michelin for the city. It's available in a lot of languages, but the French edition is best if you have reading knowledge of it. That way, you get the historic and cultural background of the places you visit. Read up on the next attraction while riding on the MÃ©tro.

Use the RER and the main underground central city MÃ©tro lines. Avoid the clangy-clangy elevated lines which run east-west in the part of the city where you will be. Parisians count a journey, not by travel time or distance, but by the number of transfers (Fr.: correspondances) you have to make. That's because many transfers involve several escalators plus walking a block or two in (safe, well-lit) transfer tunnels. Think about that in your planning.
