There are many local specialties. Try to search the web for the different sub cultures, but take Savoy for example. It used to be its own independent kingdom (like burgundy), and was part of Italy for a while. It's known for its cheeses, like reblochon, tartiflette (heavy cheese dish). The Dauphine, which used to be the Dauphin (prince of France)'s very own kingdom, is know for its scalloped potatoes "Gratin Dauphinois", literally "Scalloped dish from the Dauphin's region". I think that you can learn a lot from each region by looking at its name, and the origin of its famous dishes. You could do a culinary roadmap if you chose to!
Good luck and bon appetit! |

Provence is known for Lavender (the plant, its scent) and soap making and perfume making. Oh, and Provencal is the main language in Provence, but of course they speak French, too. And Sunflowers are grown a lot there.
Also, try going to http://www.travelchannel.com and using the search feature. I typed in "France" an lots of stuff came up. Try the Passport to Europe series they have highlights of printed on that website. Several episodes were about France. |
