The Gironde region on the coast to the North of Bordeaux is very good and full of campsites - see http://www.uk.tourisme-gironde.cg33.fr/

The drive down from a channel port isnt too bad

The Franche Compte area. The fresh walnuts are just about ready now, and they grow wild in that area. The auberges are great and the food really good. You can cross over into Switzerland (Basle) by tram and stroll along the banks of the Rhine

In Lorraine, Try "Camping de La Pelouse" at Jaulny (54470) 0033 (0)3 83 81 91 67 ................It's on a buttress in a curve of the small river, the ancient village and Chateaux are on the next hill...................We go every two years to the Balloon meet at former USAF Chambley Air Base..... www.pilatre-de-rozier.com ...........It's quite OK......It was www.campingdelapelouse.com.....

I would go to a campsite and erect my tent.

I would camp at the campground on the banks of the Rhone right next to the castle at Tarascon. It is in the perfect location for sightseeing in the south of France.

To a hotel. Ditch tent and get ensuite facilities.
