If you were going on a trip to France what would you bring with you? |
I am planning on going to France, at first to see how it is, then to live if like it. On my trip the only things I know of bringing are money, clothes & other commonly personal things any person would bring on a trip, and a book of french translation. What else would I need if anything at all? |

Take as few clothes as possible and buy clothes there. You will have to budget for this. French are fashion conscious and you (or me for that matter) will look pretty dorky in what we wear to the mall or a restaurant. They wear very dressy casual by our standards for the cafe. You don't need much else. Just what you mentioned. Maybe a Eurail Pass and LOTS of Euros because Europe is expensive. |

1) a power adapter-if your planning on taking any type of electrical
device with you, like a hair dryer.
2) a cheap watch; go to the dollar store & buy one, then if its lost
or stolen, you won't care, as it only cost $1.
3) map or guide book in English: unless your french is good ,
you will need this more than you think.
4) copy of your documents; take a copy of the front page of
your passport, your plane tickets & your
itenerary. Keep one with you & leave one
at home with someone you can contact.
Should they get lost or stolen, its a lot easier
to get them replaced when you can prove
that you had them.
5) a sense of humor; Have fun, enjoy the trip, expect the
unexpected. Thats what traveling is all about.

a small piece of advice from a French girl ;-)
Apart from all things that were already listed, don't forget that we don't use the same units of measurement !
So make a list of general equivalences (foot>meter, farenheit>celsius, miles>kilometers, gallon>litre, etc).
we write dates and time differently too !
A small note can avoid a lot of confusion in your everyday life if you want to read a plan (how long to walk 500 meters), order a glass of wine (how much are 50 cl?), know if the weather will be cold, etc.
And don't forget your smile and a tiny dictionary ! French people don't speak English very well, but if you're patient and willing, they will help you (except from people in Paris, who are unpleasant and aggressive - we owe them the bad reputation of French people :-(

do not wear jeans with flip flops!! they totally hate that American style in France. I wore it once, while I was on a trip there, and I got SPAT on and some French local spoke obscenities to me! It was freakin horrible! |

If you're planning to stay longer all what you need the cloths you have on and replacement.
your favorite books & enough cash for a week,
One credit card,and enough fund in the bank
to use through ATM machines in any bank
because you get better rates.
Remember,if you're U.S.citizen,you'll be allowed
to stay for 3 months and if you have enough fund you can renew your stay.
you need a special conditions to be allowed
to work in the country. |

7. be safe, when travelling alone be wary of crooks who work in teams of two but behave as though they don't know each other. If someone makes you uncomfortable definitely listen to your instinct and go to where you will be safe
