In France "what region does champagne come from"?

Champagne's real name is in fact vin de Champagne, wine from Champagne. The area it comes from is called Champagne which is why the French refuse to have sparkling wine from another region or country called Champagne.
The place is in dark grey on the map.

It comes from Champagne-Ardennes

you answered your own question, the champagne region.

paul r
the region is commonly referred to as champagne, but it is actually in the departement called Marne.
the capital is Epernay, and is beautiful!
the avenue de champagne in epernay has the headquarters buildings of most of the major champagne producers - moet, pol goger, mercier etc.

Champagne comes from the Champagne region of France, hence the drink's name.

Under EU regulations only wine produced in the Champagne region can be called Champagne. Australia and other countries produce many good wines of similar quality and taste to Frence Champagne, but the wine cannot be called champagne. A new trade deal between the EU and Australia, in December 2008, prohibits the use of the name Champagne on Australian wines. It's probably the same with other countries that produce 'sparkling wine'.

Campagne. I think.

1 Champagne, mostly

2 Capital Chalons - despite earler answers - although Epernay is the twin capital of champagne the drink

3 That name may be used only by approved producers in approved regions - some of whom are in the neighbouring but nonetheless entirely different region of Burgundy

4 Other regions of France, notably Burgundy, Loire and Alsace, produce comparable fizz

5 And so do other countries, notably Spain and Australia
