yes it'is. I can't say something else, I live there !
it's a nice place with a lot of activities to do, a lot of things to see, a strong culture to discover. concerning the weather don't expect to have a tropical or saharian weather... . Brittany is said to be a rainy place, it's not totally wrong, but I can't agree with that. you have to know why you come : if you want to stay all day long laying on a beach, taking the sun in a warm place, it's better for you to go somewhere else (even if it's possible in Brittany !).
you can learn a bit more here : http://wikitravel.org/en/Bretagne
or here (I think it's more complete) : http://wiki.couchsurfing.com/en/Brittany - I've contributed to this page)

Brittany is a beautiful area, that has a great deal to offer to the tourists. The north coast has many fine beaches whilst the most western part has absolutely stunning cliffs and scenery. There are many lovely towns, some very ancient and picturesque, and larger and imposing ones like Rennes and Quimper with impressive buildings and shops . It has many traditions and whilst you only see the magnificent local costumes at festivals and on special occasions, there are all sorts or ancient and magnificent churches and particularly spectacular carved calvaries with intricate biblical scenes in public squares. One of the most amazing areas is at Carnac where there are hundreds of megalith stones standing and arranged in distinctive patterns, and there are isolated dolmens and menhirs that are a rarety elsewhere.
On the Northern coast just between Normandy and Brittanny stands the Mont Saint -Michel, a fantatic abbey built in the middle ages on an off-shore rock which now is classified as a world heritage site, and not far from there, the town of Saint-Malo with its "intra muros" city is a real curiosity. It has miles of sandy beach and several islands that you can walk to at low tide. It is also a port and offers yachting and sailing facilities.
The village of Lochronan in the south west is considered one of the most picturesque agglomarations in France. Nantes is a vibrant city with one of the best and largest universities in France and offers excellent shopping facilities.
The food in Brittany is glorious. Due to its long coast there is masses of fresh shellfish, lobsters and seafood of all kinds. The real speciality of Brittany is the Buckwheat pancake, which is wafer thin and huge, that is filled with ingredients of your choice which can be savoury or sweet, and the local cider which is served in bowls (Bollée de cidre).
Since the climate in Brittany is pleasant due to the warmth of the Gulf Stream, there is a lot of agriculture in the countryside and the produce grown there is fresh and varied. Galettes bretonnes are absolutely delicious as a sweet.
The weather in the summer is warm and generally sunny, so much so that many people come to holiday there from the UK, so there is a large quantity of good hotels, camping sites, and many facilities for water sports, riding and other holiday acitivities.
We hire a car and go round the peninsula stopping for two or three nights here and there, but if your thing is staying on a beach and relaxing, then there are hundreds of beautiful, clean sandy beaches to choose from. It is an area where you can enjoy culture and holiday pursuits and cannot be recommended enough as a holiday destination.
To get an idea of what it looks like, and what there is to do, see the following:

We used to go camping in the area of Pont Aven, usually the first two weeks in July and generally the weather was great.
You are there just as the peaches are really ripe and artichokes are being harvested. Our favourite lunch was an artichoke between us for starter, a real French stick, Normandy butter and a local Camembert, followed by big juicy peaches! The langoustines and fish soup took some beating, too.
Port Manech is a lovely little Town/Village famed for its water mills and home some time to Gaugin. A local place producing Fou Mad biscuits and weekly food market, easy to drive to somewhere like Port Manech for beach (and nice little restaurants) or the peace of Riec sur Belon and more good food at Chez Melanie. If you like bigger Towns, it's not far from Quimper.
We're talking of going again next year - haven't been for some years because our daughter has emigrated and we've been visiting her.
As you can gather - we love it! |
