Is Nice, France part of the French Riviera?

I am thinking about visiting Nice, France along with Paris. I was wondering if Nice was one of the prettiest, homy cities on the french coast and if it has the french riviera?

Yes... It is the "gateway" of sorts. Nice is a bit dirty and run-down, but the scenery is beautiful. Tip: The best restaurants are often away from the touristy areas.

Yes, Nice is on the french riviera but I'd rather visit St. Tropez! Much more charming...

Yes it is on the French riviera and no, it's definitely not one of the prettiest cities there.

I tend to agree with the first answer. I had kept fond childhood memories of Nice from where we used to take the ferry to Corsica in the summer and I went back in the winter of 2003 and was extremely disappointed. I found it dirty, the people are extremely cold and everything is way overpriced (it's gotta be the most expensive city in France judging from the prices I saw in cafés!). And the originally beautiful landscapes inland are getting spoiled by construction, there were cranes everywhere on the surrounding hills.

Nice has some interesting sites to visit though but I wouldn't make it a vacation destination, just a day trip would be enough. As mentioned above, smaller towns and villages on the riviera are much cuter.

Nice is like the capital of the French Riviera. It is the most popular city of the FR, right with the smaller St. Tropez.
