Is Paris called the "City of Light" or "City of Lights"?
City of Light is the direct translation for Ville lumière, but both are still in use.
Why a city of light(s)?
Many hypothesis. One common comes from the predominant role the city had during the enlightenment age, shedding "light" (knowledge and culture) around the planet.
A second one comes from the work done in the XIXth century to transform the overcrowded and dirty city in a "luminous" one. The largest construction project of Paris' history was then undertaken to alleviate these problems.
Some other hypothesis are plausible, but I think its enough for the French history course for tonight.
