Is buying counterfeit goods in France illegal?

I was looking at Paris's Intl airport and i came to a page where it says that when security decides to check your bags and finds counterfeit items, they can be fine 300,000 euros and 3 years in prison. Is that true?

Yes, its true. France has a very strong interest in protecting brand names and backs it up with appropriate laws.

Cabal
Yes. As mentioned above, the really big fines are for those who are trying to import them to sell them, but if you have conterfeit goods in your luggage and can't prove you bought them in good faith (in a real upfront shop instead of on a marketplace for example), you will not only have it confiscated and destroyed but you will be fined as well.
For example, for years on the Italian side of the border you had the Vintimiglia market well known for its conterfeit luxury items, and on the French side of the border you had the police officers waiting for the shoppers to come back with their counterfeit Vitton bag or any such item.

aflumpire
if it is the official airport website then yes, it would be true.

If it's counterfeit, the definition of that is that it's illegal!

Millie
Yes it is illegal to KNOWINGLY buy counterfeit items. But someone who was duped by a dishonest seller won't risk anything. The very harsh sentences you mention apply only to those carrying counterfeit goods in order to sell them.

Otherwise yes, making, buying, selling or importing fake brand name products is illegal because it not only hurts the economy and buyers who get lower quality items (where do you get your fake Cartier watch repaired with your fake warranty?) but it can also be a health hazard, as in baby toys not responding to safety norms or clothes containing illegal chemicals in their dye, etc.

And counterfeit production often relies on child labor and other forms of human exploitation (sweatshops). So the law is not made just to protect luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, the counterfeit business is a serious matter, hurting all kinds of people at all levels.
