Zafir has it right. We are a democratic republic with presidential elections every five years. But our election system is different from the US.
Our president is elected directly by the people, no voting for an Electoral College here.
We have as many candidates as can register on the first round. To do so a candidate needs 500 endorsements from French elected officials. Not as easy as it sounds.
If one candidate doesn't have a straight majority on the first round (50% + 1 vote) the two candidates with the highest score square off in a second round where the highest score will win.
Our prime Minister is chosen by the president after the election, not before. |

France is a democratic republic with a publicly elected President. The current President, Nicola Sarkozy, was elected to office in May 2007, defeating Socialist candidate Segolene Royal. |

France is called a democracy but in relaity is run by the descendants of King Louis XVI and Prince Charles. Prince Charles is the real power in france, and he even makes his own fuel with wine

French Republic looks like the one who has democracy, but Nicolas Sarkozy does not act like the one who can bring democracy to France. Jacques Chirac is 100 times better than him. |
