I agree with Millie -- it's never a bad idea to go to Paris! I've been there in December, January, February, March, May, and June. (Last year was from December 27 till January 6.) The weather was chilly and overcast, but I'm originally from Michigan so it didn't bother me. I just dressed in layers.

You can even still sit in outdoor cafes because many of them will have either glassed in the seating area for the season, or there will be large electric heaters. That's perfect for enjoying a delicious cup of hot chocolate.

In January, you'll probably still get to see some of the city's Christmas decorations. I was there in March a couple years ago, and there were still decorations out. My friend who lives there said the city is slow to take them down.

Enjoy your trip, and please take me with you!

Going to Paris is never a bad idea. Of course January is not the best time weatherwise but there is so much to do and see that any time of the year is a good time to visit Paris.

It will actually be more authentic than during high touristic season. It is the best time to enjoy the districts that would otherwise be overcrowded such as the Champs Elysées and Montmartre. Also visiting Notre Dame when it is devoid of hords of tourists enhances the spiritual atmosphere of the place and you will be able to see details better.

Also the winter sales will start around January 9 so it will be a great time for shopping.

There is a lot of street and night life year long in Paris to keep you entertained. If you come from a warm climate, make sure you dress really warm though. Go, you'll have fun!

It might actually be a great idea.

Of course the weather is likely to be err... quite not floridian. But most of the things to do in Paris are indoor anyway.

And there will be a lot of advantages.

+ Better hotels fares. It will be offseason.
+ Less crowded attractions. In the summer it can be quite frustrating to not be able to fully appreciate everything.
+ Paris under the snow is quite a unique show. albeit a rare one.
+ Winter sales begin the second week of january.

If I had a choice between July, August and January - I'd be in Paris in January.

i am french and can just tell you it's not necessary to go there except if you really want to be abble to say "I've been in paris...". I don't like this place, it's too big and i don't found it so nice compare to some other big european cities.
concerning janary, the weather wil be cold, there won't be so many tourist, you will always find something to do.
