Is it legal to bring cheese from France to the US?

Yes, yo ucan bring back AGED cheese from abroad (even France) - hard cheeses and ones with rinds are generally aged. You may not bring FRESH cheese (like cottage cheese or Chavrie). The stinky cheeses you want to bring back, like brie, camembert, morbier, etc. are aged cheeses.

Just be prepared to stink up your luggage. At room temperature, many of these cheeses will stink (still tastes good when you get home!). For that reason, I recommend the hard cheeses as they will transport better (in other words, avoid brie).

yes

The US customs site is unclear. It says "You may bring bakery items and certain cheeses into the United States." But it doesn't say which cheeses are allowed. It goes on to say "The APHIS web site features a Travelers Tips section and Game and Hunting Trophies section that offers extensive information about bringing food and other products into the country"

But I couldn't find Travelers Tips on the APHIS site http://www.aphis.usda.gov

I think it depends on whether the cheese was made from raw milk or pasturized milk. They sell a variety of cheeses in the airport in Paris.

it is illegal. french cheese contains lot of things which are banned in the US.
However, you could take prior permission from customs and FDA

No, but I have brought it back before. The worst that can happen is they would take it from you. Don't bring back anything too smelly, though, if they smell it they'll realize something's up.
